Drain Cleaning for Clogged and Backed-Up Pipes

Request an estimate and compare

Plumbing provider clearing a clogged home drain with a cable machine in a Jersey City basement

Say you come home and the tub is full of gray water that will not leave. Maybe the kitchen sink gurgles every time the washer runs. These are the signs of a blocked pipe, and they tend to get worse, not better.

Aifive Plumbing is a referral service. We do not clear drains ourselves. We connect homeowners in Jersey City and the Jersey City area with independent local providers who do the work. You can request an estimate, compare what each provider offers, and decide without pressure. This page explains the causes, the tools, the typical costs, and the questions worth asking before you say yes.

Drain backing up right now? Start here

Say you come home and the shower floor has an inch of cloudy water that will not go down. Your stomach drops. Take a breath. A few quick steps can keep a bad afternoon from getting worse.

  • Stop running water anywhere in the house. No laundry, no dishwasher, no flushing if you can help it.
  • Move rugs, boxes and cardboard away from the wet area.
  • Wear gloves and boots if the water looks dirty.
  • Snap a few photos. They help later if you need to document damage for a claim.

Then ask for help. A local provider can often handle emergency drain clearing, and many can respond quickly.

One drain or the whole house?

Here is a simple test. Run the sink nearest the problem. Then flush a toilet. If only one fixture is slow, the clog is probably in that fixture's own branch pipe. If the tub bubbles when the toilet flushes, or the basement floor drain starts to rise, the blockage is likely farther down, in the main line.

Main line trouble is the more urgent case. In a full basement, water settles in the low spot, and that is usually your floor drain.

Signs the main line is blocked

  • Several drains run slowly at the same time
  • Toilets gurgle when another fixture drains
  • Water or sewage shows up at a floor drain
  • A sewer smell lingers in the basement

A camera look inside the pipe can show whether it is a simple clog or damage. If the pipe is cracked or collapsed, the job moves into sewer line repair. That is a different job with its own estimate.

What you can safely try yourself

Picture a bathroom sink that drains like molasses. Pop out the stopper and you find a gray rope of hair. That is a fair job for a homeowner.

  • Clean the stopper. Pull it out and wipe away hair and soap gunk.
  • Use a plunger. Block the overflow hole with a wet rag so pressure goes down the pipe.
  • Clear the P-trap. Put a bucket under the curved pipe, loosen the nuts by hand, and empty it.
  • Try a small hand snake. A cheap plastic or wire tool works on sink and tub drains.

Where DIY should stop

Now say you plunge a toilet three times and the water climbs back up. Stop. Pushing harder can force the clog deeper or strain old joints.

Handing it off makes sense when:

  • More than one drain is affected
  • Sewage is coming up
  • The clog returns within days
  • Your pipes are old cast iron, clay or patched lines
  • A rented machine would be going into a pipe you cannot see

Older homes are tricky. Aging pipes can be brittle, and a rough cable can scrape or crack them. Pro tools, plain answers: an experienced provider knows when to push and when to stop.

Common causes of clogged drains

  • Kitchen: cooking grease cools and hardens inside the pipe. Coffee grounds and food scraps pile on top.
  • Bathroom: hair and soap scum build a mat that catches everything else.
  • Toilets: thick paper, wipes labeled flushable, and small items.
  • Main line: tree roots slipping into joints, scale inside old cast iron, or a sagging section where waste settles.

Cold climates add a twist. Freeze-thaw cycles shift soil and can nudge buried joints out of line. Spring snowmelt soaks the ground, and roots head for the nearest moisture, including your pipe.

How providers clear a blocked pipe

There are three common approaches, from lighter to heavier.

  • Hand auger or drum machine. A coiled cable goes in and breaks up or hooks the clog. Good for sinks, tubs and many branch lines.
  • Motorized cable machine. A longer, stronger cable for main lines and root growth.
  • Hydro jetting. High-pressure water scours the pipe walls. It can clear grease and scale that a cable only pokes through.

Many providers also run a small camera to see the cause. Ask for a look if the clog keeps coming back.

Why you should skip chemical drain cleaners

Imagine pouring a bottle into a stopped sink. The liquid sits there, working on nothing but your pipe. Strong chemicals can warm and soften older pipe materials and irritate skin and lungs.

They also create a hazard for whoever comes next. A provider who opens the trap may get splashed. If you already used one, say so up front.

Comparing estimates, then deciding

Say two providers quote the same kitchen clog, and the numbers are far apart. Do not just pick the smaller one. Look at what each price includes.

  • Is the trip charge in the price?
  • Is it a cable job or a jetting job?
  • Does it include a camera look?
  • Is there a flat price or an hourly rate?
  • Is the quote in writing?

Compare, then decide. There is no obligation to accept any estimate you get through Aifive Plumbing.

Questions to ask the plumber

  • What do you think is causing the blockage?
  • Which tool will you use, and why?
  • Will you run a camera afterward to confirm the line is clear?
  • What happens if the clog returns?
  • Could this be a sign of a damaged pipe?

Keeping drains clear

  • Let cooking grease cool, then toss it in the trash.
  • Use a hair catcher in every shower and tub.
  • Flush only toilet paper.
  • Run hot water down the kitchen sink after washing dishes.
  • Before winter storms and spring thaw, check that the floor drain and sump area are clear.

A small habit now can save a messy evening later.

Questions

Drain Cleaning FAQ

Why is my drain gurgling?

Gurgling usually means air is being pulled past a partial clog. If it happens in one sink, the blockage is likely close by. If it happens in several fixtures, the main line may be partly blocked.

Can I use a plunger or snake on a clogged drain myself?

Yes, for a single sink, tub or toilet, a plunger or small hand snake is a reasonable first try. Stop if water rises, more drains are affected, or your pipes are old and fragile.

How much does it cost to clear a clogged drain?

Typical U.S. costs run from about $100 for a simple sink clog to several hundred dollars for a main line or hydro jetting. Prices vary by job, so request a written estimate and compare more than one.
